A lot of people say he was a rip-off of the Punisher, but really, the Punisher wasn't "himself" yet. He was still being portrayed as a TOTAL psycho in Spider-Man titles.
I remember his intro arc in NTT well. Never saw the series though due to lack of any nearby comic shops.
This one definitely popped off the comic page. DC had some great ads in the mid 80s.
I'm actually going to be blogging about his first appearance soon. I love when real world images are juxtaposed with comics. The contrast is always striking.

My college room mate who struck me as a smart guy once said to me "My favourite comic is "VIJILAWNT", have you heard of it?"
i think i learned this word from the comic.
i also thought this was a great ad, very unusual and distinctive.
