Lois Lane - 1967

sg
I tried to find an ad for a book with an On Sale date of June 30th; I got pretty close!

As a kid, I was never into Kurt Schaffenberger's work too much, now of course I realize its totally awesome. The guy was a friggin' genius.

Secret Origins - 1986

sg
I always liked the Secret Origins book. It got a little bogged down sometimes in retrofitting old stories to fit current continuity, but it could be a lot of fun and it really came into its own when some new editor named Mark Waid took over.

Pulp Heroes Week, Part 5 - 1973

sg
An absolutely superb ad, the exact approach to take for something as unusual as The Shadow. I love that its in black and white.

Come to think of it, when they made The Shadow movie in 1995, this scene should've been the trailer. Period.

This ad was sent to me by my pal Craig Wichman, who I believe stands alone as the only person to have sent something to me for every single one of my blogs. Thanks Craig!

Pulp Heroes Week, Part 4 - 1987

sg
I didn't read DC's Doc Savage comic too much, but this is a nifty ad.

Pulp Heroes Week, Part 3 - 1973

sg
Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of mid-1970s newsvendors?

Pulp Heroes Week, Part 2 - 1975

sg
I was confused by this book as a kid--is the book called The Avenger, or Justice Inc.? And why is he all-white? Questions, questions...

Pulp Heroes Week, Part 1 - 1973

sg
Pulp heroes have had a tough time as comic book stars, but is wasn't for lack of trying. All this week I'll be posting some beautiful ads starring DC's pulp heroes!

The Outsiders - 1985

sg
I was--and remain--a fan of Mike W. Barr's work, and The Outsiders (and the earlier version, Batman and the Outsiders) was one of my favorite titles.

...that has nothing to do with this ad, I just wanted to say that.

Showcase: Jason's Quest - 1970

This is one unusual ad!

The Dark Knight Returns - 1986

sg
...did this series ever go anywhere?

'Mazing Man - 1986

sg
I really loved 'Mazing Man, it was cute and funny and of course didn't stand a chance in the mid-80s comic book marketplace.

I'd love to see DC try it again--they've brought back Jonah Hex, Bat Lash, The War That Time Forgot, why not 'Maze?

Batman - 1969

sg
That cover is so odd it makes me want to find a copy...

The Secret Six - 1968

sg
An innovative ad for an innovative cover to an innovative book!

The Annual Tradition - 1982

sg
I was so glad when DC brought back their annuals; I always thought the concept was a neat one--usually DC or Marvel would cram them to the staples with fun stuff that you didn't see in the regular books.

This ad is kinda dull for what should be a Giant Announcement, but at least they brought the Annuals back...
