Seven Soldiers of Victory - 1974

sg
I'm cheating a little here--this isn't a real "ad", more of a blurb at the end of an issue of Adventure Comics. Its just that I really love The Seven Soldiers of Victory.

Happy! Hilarious! Hep! - 1969

sg
I've always wondered--why did DC try and market these Archie knockoffs (I don't mean that as a knock, but let's be honest) as "hip" titles? Did they really think hippies or kids who were buying Exile on Main Street or Blonde on Blonde were buying these kinds of comics?

Detective Comics - 1967

sg
A great ad, an insane cover!

Tuesday, August 26, 2008

Tomahawk - 1951

sg
What a sweeeeet ad...

Monday, August 25, 2008

Shade The Changing Man - 1977

sg
Interesting--DC obviously hadn't quite come up with a name for the book yet!

Showcase: Johnny Double - 1968

sg
DC's Showcase book ran a lot of really interesting and/or bizarre material, especially in the late 60s. And the ads, like this one, were just as innovative.

Plus, it rhymes.

"Dangers and Thrills!" - 1969

sg
Two of my favorite titles in one ad! Ginchy!

Wednesday, August 20, 2008

Anthro - 1969

sg
A very fun ad...shouldn't there be a Showcase Presents: Anthro by now?

Tuesday, August 19, 2008

Action Comics - 1972

sg
With all due respect to Curt Swan, Nick Cardy, Murphy Anderson, et al, I don't think you could really call the pictures inside an issue of Action Comics "daring."

"Our All-New Adventure Line" - 1975

sg
I always liked this ad; it was neat seeing all these different characters together in one ad.

Though I have to say--at the top there--Deadman, not Aquaman? Black Canary, not Green Arrow? Huh?

Shadow War of Hawkman - 1985

sg
A great ad, a great series...

Saturday, August 16, 2008

Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen - 1971

sg
I couldn't find a book advertised as being on sale August 16th exactly, this was the closest I could get!

DC got a lot of mileage out of the "One to startle you..." line...

"Two Great Hits" - 1971

sg
You'd think this ad would've been from Halloween, since it features two spooky covers. But May is nice too!

Debbi - 1971

sg
So the main ingredient in this comic they're trying to get across in this ad is...?

Monday, August 11, 2008

DC Special - 1971

sg
It's my birthday at the end of the week, so leading up to it I'll be posting all ads for books that were on sale the year of my birth, 1971.

This ad is boffo all the way--using Sergio Aragones (and Cain, no less) to help sell a book with a Neal Adams cover! It doesn't get much better than this...

Angel Love - 1986

sg
I remember getting this series when it came out, even though it was about as far from the steady diet of superhero comics I was reading. I guess I was trying to branch out.

I remember it wasn't too bad. I guess it was a flop, since DC never did it again.

Sgt. Rock - 1967

sg
That's a lot of text in a small space, yet still a perfectly balanced ad.

Thursday, August 7, 2008

The Metal Men - 1969

sg
I had never seen this ad before Robby Reed sent it over to me. Thanks Robby!

The ad is nothing that special, but dang, does that cover make the issue look interesting!

Wednesday, August 6, 2008

Superboy - 1967

sg
What a fun ad! 25 cents well spent.

Tuesday, August 5, 2008

Mystery In Space - 1962

sg
An absolutely gorgeous ad; as good as any sci-fi movie poster of the time. Too bad it was crammed into a measly half-page space!

Monday, August 4, 2008

DC Special: The Viking Prince - 1971

sg
A pretty decent ad, a spectacular cover, courtesy my old teacher, Joe Kubert!

Sunday, August 3, 2008

The House of Forbidden Love - 1971

sg
Usually I run more recent ads on weekends, but since we ran a romance ad yesterday (as the last part of our team-up with Dial B For Blog) I thought we'd have an all-romance weekend.

An unusual book, and not one you saw advertised much. I'd say the ad's colors don't match the book its selling very well, but the cover itself is really nice in any case.

16 Days of The Batman, Part 16

sg
Day 16 of our team-up with Dial B For Blog!

This ad is so spiffy, I think it would've made me want to buy this book, even though it was an icky girls comic. (Which we need more of now!)

This is our final day of team-ups; I thank Robby Reed for asking me to get involved in his absolutely incredible 16 Days of The Batman event, it was a lot of fun--and I hope all of you felt the same!

16 Days of The Batman, Part 15

sg
Day 15 of our team-up with Dial B For Blog!

The Adventures of Alan Ladd? Wow, comics sure were different back then...
