Ah, the sweet pain of dashed hopes...

Gotta love that Staton artwork; it makes the memories roll in all fresh-faced and ask, "Wha' hoppen?"

"More pages! More stories!"

What about -

"Cheaper paper! Worse printing!"

Boy, seeing the stuff through the years all laid out here , I really notice that change...

(Hated it then, too!)

Best,
-Craig W.

this ad makes me so sad...what could have been...

plus it has Ditko's Odd Man, who i dont think ever actually appeared anywhere, in the back!

No, I'm sure I saw The Odd Man somewhere...can't think where, at the moment, though. Anybody remember reading him? He was a back-up in something, I'm pretty sure...?

good call, russell!

i'm only half right. his debut was supposed to be in Shade, but got scrapped when the book was cancelled and then it ran in Cancelled Comic Calvacade.

but then it ran "officially" in Detective #487, of all places!

The summer of the DC Explosion was when I started to seriously get into comics as a youth, so all those 50-cent 25 pagers have a lot of nostalgia for me. The worst thing about the Implosion was not getting to see Shade #9, as that was published in Cancelled Comics Cavalcade. (I have since seen black and white scans on the internet somewhere, although I don't think they are still available online.)
And yes, Odd Man did run in Detective Comics. Another interesting Ditko hero. Too bad we didn't get to see more of him.

Macsnafu - I just saw yesterday that DC is releasing v.1 of the Ditko Omnibus early this August. Gotta wonder if they'll include Shade #9. Here's the Amazon link to bookmark.
