One of the most famous ads DC ever ran...Kirby is Here!

Kirby is coming, and DC gave him....Jimmy Olsen?!? I know he didn't want anything *too* mainstream, but....sheesh.

Yeah, Russell - but was Jack maybe in on that? Asked for a Supes title, & that's the one they offered, as the others were in steady hands?

I can only say, some of my favorite Kirby stuff comes from his DC (well, SECOND DC) period:
THE DEMON, THE LOSERS, and the BLACK MAGIC, SANDMAN, & BOY COMMANDOS reprints.

Great weekend,

I could be wrong, but i think the story was Kirby arrived at DC and said "Give me your worst-selling book" and he was handed Jimmy Olsen.

Now, there must be some stretching of the truth in this story--among all DC's titles, Jimmy Olsen sold the worst? Doubtful--you'd think any book with a Superman connection would probably sell a certain amount of copies, more than, say, All-Star Western, House of Secrets, or Jerry Lewis.

I do recall hearing that story, Rob...

And I think you may be right, that the King exaggerated to make the point:

"See? Even given their base Lead, I produced shining Gold!"

Best,
